1979 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible with Only 1,800 Miles Joins DFW Car & Toy Museum

The DFW Car & Toy Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, has added a remarkable piece of automotive history to its collection: a 1979 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible with only 1,800 miles on the odometer. This nearly pristine example of the iconic 'people's car' represents the final chapter of a production run that saw over 330,000 cabriolets built by Karmann, the renowned German coachbuilder that crafted open-top Beetles since 1949.

The 1979 model is part of the evolved VW 1303 series, which featured MacPherson strut front suspension and a curved windshield, offering improved comfort and stability while retaining the Beetle's charming simplicity. This glossy black convertible's convertible top folds neatly at the rear, inviting open-air cruising just as it did when it rolled off the line. Its exceptional condition, with a 'very solid' body and 'good original floor pan,' underscores its meticulous care and preservation.

'The Beetle is the people's car in every sense, but this one is especially rare,' said Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum. 'With fewer than 2,000 miles, it's as close as you'll get to stepping back in time. It's not just a classic—it's a time capsule.' The car is displayed alongside over 200 rare vehicles and 3,000 vintage toys and collectibles, making the museum a must-see for enthusiasts of all generations.

Ron Sturgeon, a dedicated car collector for over 30 years, began his passion for automobiles in his teenage years by teaching himself to repair Volkswagens. This led to a successful career in the automotive industry, including building one of the largest auto salvage operations in the country. The museum, formerly known as DFW Elite Toy Museum, is now located at 2550 McMillan Parkway in North Fort Worth, offering free parking and admission, climate-controlled storage, and event facilities. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and visitors can find more information on the museum's website at dfwcarandtoymuseum.com.
