Following a productive business delegation visit to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan led by HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee, the Alatau City Authority held an Investment Round Table in Hong Kong on June 11, 2026. The event, attended by Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Kanat Bozumbayev, underscores the strengthening economic ties between Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, and Central Asia. It aims to build on the momentum of the recent visit, during which 96 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed.
John Lee emphasized Hong Kong's unique position under the 'one country, two systems' principle, stating, "Hong Kong is eager to build on this momentum, to explore wide-ranging business and investment co-operation with Kazakhstan - Alatau City very much included." The roundtable gathered government representatives, leading enterprises, financial institutions, and investors to explore opportunities in Alatau City, a greenfield project near Almaty focusing on fintech, low-altitude economy, smart city development, and infrastructure.
Silas Chu, Director of Exhibitions and Digital Business of HKTDC, highlighted the council's commitment to Central Asia, noting the establishment of an Almaty consultant office in 2018. The HKTDC, celebrating its 60th anniversary, promotes Hong Kong as a global business hub through platforms like the Belt and Road Summit and InnoEX.
A key outcome was the signing of an MoU between Templewater Limited, a business delegate from the Central Asia mission, and DASCO Capital to explore a fund supporting Alatau City's development. The Central Asia visit yielded 66 MoUs from the business delegation covering trade, investment, finance, technology, and aviation, plus 15 government-level agreements and 15 non-delegation MoUs in academia and culture.
The HKTDC will continue to follow up on these projects, providing business matching and support services to facilitate implementation. Through conferences, business missions, and outreach, the council aims to help enterprises from Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland seize opportunities in Belt and Road markets.
