The Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant, a linchpin of Slovakia's energy infrastructure and source of approximately 10% of the nation's electricity, is set for a major overhaul. International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a contract by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA to modernize the facility, which sits on the Danube River. The project, valued in the mid three-digit million-euro range, aims to refurbish the plant's electromechanical equipment, boosting its efficiency and reliability for decades to come.
The modernization will focus on the plant's eight Kaplan turbine-generator units, which together provide 720 MW of capacity. These units will be systematically upgraded to the latest technical standards, with the goal of improving efficiency and availability while extending the service life of critical components by at least 30 years. The scope of work includes model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning, as well as the modernization of turbine and generator components, automation systems, excitation, protection, and control systems. Additionally, transformers and auxiliary electrical systems will be renewed to ensure the entire plant operates at peak performance.
One of the key considerations in this project is minimizing disruption to Slovakia's power supply. The work will be carried out sequentially, allowing the plant to maintain availability during the modernization and reduce the impact on ongoing operations. This phased approach ensures that the Gabcikovo plant can continue to contribute to the national grid while the upgrades are underway.
The importance of this project extends beyond the immediate technical upgrades. The Gabcikovo plant is not only the largest hydroelectric facility in Slovakia but also a central pillar of the country's renewable energy strategy.
