As ACA Premiums Double, Discount Medical Plans Emerge as a Stopgap for Florida and Texas Families

The expiration of enhanced federal premium tax credits at the end of 2025 has triggered a sharp rise in health insurance costs, leaving millions of Americans scrambling for affordable options. According to KFF, average ACA Marketplace premiums have more than doubled this year, jumping from roughly $888 to nearly $1,904 per month—a 114% increase. This surge has forced an estimated 7.3 million people to lose coverage, with 4.8 million becoming uninsured. States like Florida, with an uninsured rate near 13.2%, and Texas, which leads the nation, have been particularly hard hit.

In response, Sun Health & Dental, a discount medical plan serving Florida and Texas, reports a surge in interest from households priced out of traditional insurance. The company offers memberships starting at $40 per month for individuals, $45 for couples, and $50 for families of up to five. These plans provide access to a national network of more than 600,000 providers at pre-negotiated rates, covering primary care, specialists, dental, vision, labs, pharmacy savings, and free telemedicine. Unlike insurance, there are no premiums paid to an insurer and no claims; members pay providers directly at discounted rates, with no waiting periods and guaranteed acceptance regardless of pre-existing conditions.

“The families calling us are looking for a price they can plan around,” said Jennifer Mor, Finance Manager and Promotional Contributor at Sun Health & Dental. “A low flat membership that lets you see a doctor, dentist, or specialist the next day at a known price is often the more practical choice. It's not insurance—but for everyday care, it fills a real gap.” The company also offers member advocacy including hospital bill negotiation, which reduced members' total claims by an aggregate average of 93% in 2026, and prescription assistance through which most qualifying members pay $0.

The timing of this shift is critical. As traditional coverage becomes increasingly unaffordable, discount medical plans are stepping in as a bridge for those who need routine care but cannot bear the financial weight of full insurance. While these plans do not cover catastrophic events or meet the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate (though the federal penalty has been effectively eliminated), they provide a predictable cost structure for everyday health needs. For many families in Florida and Texas, the choice is not between insurance and a discount plan, but between a discount plan and going without any care at all.

Sun Health & Dental, which holds an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and serves more than 50,000 members, is licensed and regulated by the Florida and Texas Departments of Insurance. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, such plans are likely to play an increasingly prominent role in the market, offering a practical, albeit limited, solution for those caught in the coverage gap.
