BinBase, a provider of payment routing and card intelligence data, announced today the release of its updated 2026 Bank Identification Number (BIN) dataset. The new release introduces high-precision data structures designed to resolve routing inefficiencies caused by the global transition to 8-digit BINs and tokenized digital wallet transactions.
As major payment networks shift from legacy 6-digit BIN standards to 8-digit and 11-digit sub-ranges, standard lookup tables frequently fail to identify exact issuing banks or network capabilities. This fragmentation leads to misrouted transactions, increased interchange costs, and elevated decline rates for online merchants. The challenge is compounded by the rise of tokenized transactions from Apple Pay and Google Pay, which use Device Primary Account Numbers (DPANs) that do not match traditional BIN ranges.
BinBase addresses this operational bottleneck through an 11-to-6 digit Waterfall Lookup system. The dataset maps complex sub-ranges down to the issuer level while maintaining backward compatibility with legacy payment engines. This allows processors and merchants to accurately route transactions even when dealing with newer BIN formats or tokenized cards.

Key features of the 2026 BinBase release include high-precision sub-range mapping that resolves 11-digit and 8-digit tokenized ranges to ensure accurate transaction routing. The dataset also supports co-badged scheme identification, detecting dual-network cards across European (Carte Bancaire) and international payment schemes. Additionally, BinBase offers enterprise formats with daily updates, available as flat CSV, SQLite, and PostgreSQL database dumps for seamless local caching.
To facilitate developer integration, BinBase has published an open-schema specification and sample dataset on GitHub at https://github.com/BinBaseDatabase. This resource enables payment companies to test the new lookup system and validate its accuracy before full deployment.
The updated database comes at a time when payment networks are increasingly adopting longer BINs to expand numbering capacity and improve security. The 8-digit BIN standard, mandated by ISO 20022, allows for more granular issuer identification but also introduces complexity for legacy systems. BinBase's Waterfall Lookup bridges this gap, ensuring that transactions are routed to the correct issuer and network, thereby reducing declines and optimizing interchange fees.
