The American Heart Association announced that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, is the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, effective with today's issue. Maron, a board-certified clinical cardiologist and globally recognized researcher in pulmonary hypertension, right heart failure, and cardiomyopathy, will shape the journal's editorial direction and continue its commitment to publishing rigorous, practice-changing science.
Maron, who succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, brings a vision focused on reinvigorating the type of cardiovascular science published and fast-tracking information to readers with additional transparency. "Our mission is to reinvigorate the type of cardiovascular science and medicine published in Circulation, and fast track that information to our readers with additional transparency," Maron said in the announcement. He emphasized sharing findings in more engaging ways than ever before.
New features under Maron's leadership include a Clinician Lighthouse article for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician's Corner for real-world clinical practice, and a Patient's Corner to present key content to the public. The journal will also introduce graphic abstracts, central illustrations for invited papers, video commentaries, and expanded weekly eTOC alerts with brief summaries. A streamlined manuscript submission process with an accelerated review timeline is also planned.
Maron is senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also serves as co-executive director of the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing and previously held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and Imperial College London.
He is joined by a new editorial team, including Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA. Ten deputy editors will oversee specific topic sections, covering fundamental sciences, translational science, clinical cardiology, clinical trials, community health, population health, global cardiovascular health, and AI for process and science.
Maron's scientific impact includes more than 260 publications and roles as primary investigator for federally funded research programs for over two decades. He holds six patents and inventions related to pulmonary vascular remodeling and precision medicine. His editorial experience includes reviewer and editor roles with journals such as Circulation, The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, and JACC.
