Industrial heat generation accounts for approximately 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing the combined pollution from all cars, planes, and ships. Despite this, efforts to decarbonize industrial processes have largely overlooked heat production. Brenmiller Energy Ltd. (NASDAQ: BNRG) is seeking to address this gap with its bGen thermal energy storage (TES) platform, which uses crushed volcanic rock to store renewable electricity as high-temperature heat for on-demand release as zero-emission steam, hot water, or air.
The bGen system is designed to overcome limitations of direct electrification, such as grid constraints and high costs, by allowing customers to charge the TES when electricity prices are low and discharge during peak demand. Unlike traditional battery storage, bGen relies on abundant materials rather than critical metals, potentially reducing supply chain risks.
To lower adoption barriers, Brenmiller recently launched BNRG360, an energy-as-a-service model where the company owns and operates the systems, charging industrial customers through long-term service agreements. This shift from equipment supplier to integrated energy infrastructure provider aims to generate recurring revenue and deepen customer relationships, while offering clients a single accountable partner for their energy needs.
The global TES market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 10% through 2032, reaching nearly $14 billion, driven by rising electricity consumption, industrial electrification, grid modernization, and increasing renewable energy penetration. The expansion of AI and data centers is further straining electrical infrastructure, boosting demand for flexible energy solutions.
Brenmiller is validating its technology through a 32-megawatt-hour installation at Tempo Beverages Ltd., which is expected to replace the site's fossil fuel boiler and eliminate approximately 6,200 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. The system began delivering steam in June 2026. Brenmiller views this project as a blueprint for future industrial decarbonization deployments and is in discussions with other companies for similar projects.
Looking ahead, Brenmiller aims to grow cash flow, achieve sustainable profitability, and expand its BNRG360 customer base. As industrial heat emerges as a critical decarbonization frontier, Brenmiller's bGen platform and service model could position it to capture significant market share.
