South Carolina-based children's author, artist, and advocate for social-emotional learning Caroline Blakeslee has announced the release of her debut picture book, Brave Like Sunny. The book, now available through her official website, tells the story of a little dog named Sunny who learns that bravery is not about being fearless but about showing up despite fear, one small wag at a time.
The story follows Sunny, the happiest puppy on Sweet Gum Road, who wakes up one morning feeling different, tired, and wobbly. With his toy Lambie tucked under his chin, he makes his way to the vet's office, where a kind nurse named Nonie greets him with bubbles and peanut-butter treats, reassuring him that bravery simply means showing up. Along the way, Sunny meets a new friend in Bootsie the kitten, finds laughter in hard moments, and slowly discovers his sunshine again.
Written and illustrated entirely by Blakeslee, Brave Like Sunny is rooted in the belief that children going through illness, medical treatment, or difficult seasons deserve stories that reflect their experience without minimizing it. The book addresses the difference between cloudy days and bright ones, resting as its own form of bravery, and the quiet sparkle that shows up in laughter, listening, and perseverance. Blakeslee, who studied studio art and 3D studies at the University of South Carolina and pursued graduate work in art education and psychology, brings her artistic talent and life experience to the story. Each illustration is rendered in her distinctive watercolor and ink style.
Blakeslee explained that the book came from a place of deep personal truth. Having lived through years of illness, loss, and grief, she found that courage is not loud but the quiet decision to keep going. She wanted children who are sick, scared, or simply having a hard day to see themselves in Sunny and to know that showing up is the bravest thing in the world.
