Chisos Boots: Engineering All-Day Comfort for Cowboys Who Refuse to Quit

Austin-based Chisos Boot Company is redefining western footwear with a focus on all-day comfort, a mission born from founder Will Roman's personal struggle with back pain. Roman, a self-described stubborn Texan, refused to give up cowboy boots despite increasing discomfort. After testing countless brands and materials that addressed one issue only to aggravate another, he founded Chisos in 2019 to create a boot that combines serious construction with the support needed for long days on your feet.

The core of Chisos's approach is a removable comfort insole, which features a leather top layer over a multi-density polymer build with gel pads at the heel and ball of the foot. Roman deliberately avoided memory foam, which loses its rebound after a few hours of standing. Instead, he sought materials that provide lasting support while still allowing the leather to mold to the wearer's foot over time. "There is not another insole on the market like this," Roman said.

However, the insole is only part of the story. Chisos boots are engineered from the ground up to work in concert with the comfort system. The last is slightly larger, the heel counter is taller and made from firm vegetable-tanned leather, and a steel shank supports the arch. This stability-first philosophy sets Chisos apart from competitors who simply bolt a cushion onto a traditional shell. The company argues that extreme softness can feel good initially but forces the body to compensate, leading to fatigue and discomfort. Instead, Chisos builds a stable platform that promotes natural posture and gait.

The boots feature a walking heel with modest lift, a wider toe box, and a refined square toe on styles like the No. 2. These design choices help keep toes aligned and allow for natural balance adjustments. On hard surfaces, the leather-only stacks of traditional boots can transfer impact up the kinetic chain, so the comfort insole is designed to dissipate shock while maintaining a resolable leather build. Roman acknowledges that footwear cannot cure medical conditions, but he emphasizes the difference it can make: "Changing your boots out is probably not going to solve back discomfort overnight," he said. "But it can make a big difference. It worked for me, and I hear from customers every week about how switching to a pair of Chisos has enabled them to wear boots again."

One of the unique aspects of Chisos boots is that they improve with age. As the boots break in, the foot forms indentations in both the comfort insole and the leather insole beneath, reducing micro-movements needed for balance. This means the boots "keep learning the wearer," rather than peaking on day one. Cross-section videos on the company's YouTube channel show the layered construction—stacked leather heel, leather heel counter, and channel-welted construction—making the quality transparent.

Chisos boots are available online at chisos.com and at their Austin store at 3507 S 1st St. The company, named after the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park, supports Texas land conservation with a portion of every sale.
