CICC Global Institute Takes China's Economic Rebalancing Message to Bangkok

BANGKOK — The CICC Global Institute (CGI) convened its 2026 Q4 Macro Forum in Bangkok on October 13, marking the first time the quarterly event was held in Southeast Asia. The forum, themed "China's Economy amid Global Rebalancing: New Paradigms and New Industries," brought together experts from the International Monetary Fund, the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office, Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance, the National University of Singapore, ICBC Standard Bank, Wood Mackenzie, and NSQ Capital. Its timing, during the week of the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, positioned the gathering as a deliberate effort to inject Chinese perspectives into global economic discussions at a moment of significant international interest in China's trajectory.

Yanliang Miao, Chief Economist and Senior Managing Director of CICC, used his keynote address to argue that understanding China's economy now requires a global rebalancing lens. He emphasized that observers must weigh both the dynamism of emerging industries and the consequences of shifting from old to new growth engines for jobs, incomes, and demand. Miao noted that alongside its green and digital transitions, China is working toward a growth model supported by higher household incomes and services-led consumption. On the international monetary order, he observed that changes in the global economy, trade networks, and financial technology are pushing the system toward greater diversification. Crucially, he argued that economic and trade strength do not automatically confer international currency status; institutional credibility and the depth and breadth of financial markets remain central to the internationalization of the renminbi.

Huimin Wu, Executive Dean of CGI and Deputy Head of the Research Department at CICC, highlighted findings from The New Pattern of Dual Circulation, a book jointly published this year by CGI and CICC's Research Department. Wu said China's economy is entering a new stage in which trade and outward investment are undergoing a paradigm shift, while emerging industries are becoming increasingly important drivers of global growth. These changes, he noted, are both part of and deeply shaped by global economic rebalancing, producing a new pattern of interaction between China and the world economy.

The forum's thematic dialogues focused on the transformation of China's trade and outward investment and their global implications, as well as prospects for emerging industries including innovative pharmaceuticals, green energy, and artificial intelligence. The event was part of CGI's broader push to strengthen international exchanges and present Chinese perspectives, and it represents an innovative exploration of how to foster deeper understanding of China's economic transformation. As reported by Media OutReach Newswire, CGI intends to continue deepening its international engagement and to build an international dialogue platform focused on China's economy, contributing to mutual trust and consensus.

The significance of the Bangkok forum lies in its venue and timing as much as its content. By holding the event in Southeast Asia for the first time, CGI signals that China's rebalancing is not merely a domestic story but one with direct consequences for a region deeply integrated into Chinese trade and investment flows. The presence of multilateral institutions and regional research bodies suggests a growing appetite for structured dialogue on how China's shift toward higher-value industries and services-led growth will reshape supply chains, capital flows, and currency dynamics. For policymakers and investors, the forum's central message is that China's transition and the evolution of the international monetary system are intertwined processes that demand sustained, evidence-based engagement rather than short-term reaction.
