This advancement addresses a critical challenge in building large-scale gate-model quantum processors by significantly reducing the number of wires needed to control qubits without degrading performance.
The on-chip cryogenic control technology was originally developed by D-Wave for its commercial annealing quantum processing units (QPUs). In D-Wave's annealing systems, multiplexed digital-to-analog converters control tens of thousands of qubits and couplers using only 200 bias wires. The company has now shown that the same approach can be applied to its gate-model architectures, potentially enabling large-scale, practical gate-model QPUs that require far less wiring complexity while maintaining qubit fidelity.
