The U.S. Department of Energy, through its Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation, has committed $75 million to five projects aimed at recovering rare earth elements and other critical minerals from coal byproducts. The funding, allocated under the Domestic Industrial Facilities program, will establish pilot-scale facilities designed to convert coal waste into commercially viable critical minerals, bolstering domestic processing capabilities and reducing reliance on foreign supply chains.
These projects represent a strategic shift in the U.S. approach to critical mineral security. As the energy transition accelerates, the demand for rare earth elements—essential for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defense technologies—continues to rise. Currently, the U.S. imports over 80% of its rare earth elements, primarily from China. The DOE's investment aims to create a domestic supply chain from unconventional sources like coal ash, mine tailings, and acid mine drainage.
The selected projects will focus on developing and testing technologies at a pilot scale, with the goal of demonstrating economic viability. If successful, these technologies could be scaled up to commercial production, potentially creating new industries in coal-producing regions that have faced economic decline. The initiative also aligns with broader federal efforts to revitalize domestic manufacturing and reduce environmental hazards associated with coal waste.
Private sector involvement is also emerging in related critical mineral sectors. For example, MAX Power Mining Corp. (CSE: MAXX) (OTC: MAXXF) is actively exploring for natural hydrogen, a potential clean energy source, further highlighting the growing interest in domestic energy and mineral resources.
The DOE's investment underscores the critical importance of reducing U.S. dependence on foreign sources for materials essential to national security and clean energy technologies. By funding these pilot projects, the government is taking a concrete step toward establishing a resilient domestic supply chain for critical minerals.
