As part of the application, candidates must submit an original essay of 500 to 800 words responding to a prompt that draws on Dr. Youtsos' personal experience with a melanoma diagnosis during her medical residency. The prompt asks: "Describe a personal challenge, health-related experience, or interaction with the healthcare system that strengthened your desire to become a physician. How will that experience influence your commitment to delivering compassionate, accessible care to underserved communities?" Essays generated by artificial intelligence or previously published are not eligible.
The scholarship draws inspiration from Dr. Youtsos' professional journey, which included significant health challenges during her medical training that broadened her perspective on patient care. Those experiences reinforced her commitment to improving healthcare access and delivering patient-centered care, particularly in underserved communities.
