“The CDC has labeled poor sleep as an unrecognized epidemic. That’s why I wrote the book Beautiful Faces: The Architects of Enhanced Attractiveness and Improved Human Breathing… which discusses how we’re now treating sleep by widening airways in the mouth and the nose,” Downs stated.
Downs' approach to dental sleep medicine involves expanding the dental arches to enhance airway capacity. This method leverages the anatomical link between the mouth and nasal passages, where widening the upper dental arch can improve nasal airflow. His orthodontic solutions prioritize space creation over reduction, a principle he has championed throughout his career.
After 42 years in private practice, Downs transitioned into product development, building on earlier work co-founding a dental products company. His current innovations include Ionoxx hypochlorous acid-based products for oral and nasal hygiene, reflecting a broader trend toward integrative healthcare that connects dentistry, respiratory health, and systemic wellness.
