Energy Fuels Inc. (NYSE American: UUUU) (TSX: EFR), a leading U.S. producer of rare earth elements, uranium, and other critical materials, has completed its acquisition of Australian Strategic Materials Limited (ASM). The move significantly advances Energy Fuels' strategy to build an integrated Western mine-to-magnet supply chain, a critical step toward reducing dependence on Chinese rare earth processing.
The acquisition brings ASM's operating Korean Metals Plant in South Korea, which has an existing neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) alloy production capacity of 1,300 tonnes per year. The plant also possesses commercial metallization capabilities for neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr). Expansion plans are already underway, aiming to increase NdFeB alloy capacity to 3,600 tonnes annually, with commissioning expected as early as the end of 2026. This expansion will significantly boost Western capacity for producing rare earth metals and alloys, which are essential for permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defense applications.
Additionally, ASM's Dubbo project in Australia adds a long-life resource of rare earths and other critical minerals to Energy Fuels' portfolio. This project diversifies Energy Fuels' resource base and provides a secure source of critical materials from a stable, allied nation.
The transaction complements Energy Fuels' existing production and expansion initiatives for NdPr, terbium, and dysprosium oxides at its White Mesa Mill in Utah, as well as its heavy mineral sands projects in Brazil, Australia, and Madagascar. The combined platform now spans mining, processing, oxides, metals, and alloys, creating a vertically integrated supply chain that is unique in the Western world.
Energy Fuels' planned acquisition of Vacuumschmelze (VAC), a permanent magnet manufacturer, would extend the platform further into magnet production. If completed, this would make Energy Fuels one of the only Western companies with capabilities across the entire rare earth magnet supply chain, from mine to magnet.
With ASM shares delisted from the Australian Securities Exchange following the completion of the transaction, Energy Fuels moves forward as a major player in the critical materials sector. The company's strategic positioning is timely, given growing global concerns about supply chain security for rare earth elements and the push by governments in the U.S., Europe, and other regions to secure domestic sources of these vital materials.
