The competition featured a diverse lineup, including Antipodes, Ty Nant, Perlage, San Benedetto, Solán de Cabras, Saratoga, ROI, Kuohu, Borjomi, S.Pellegrino, Evian Sparkling, and Voss. Vellamo emerged as the winner, praised for its naturally high alkalinity that cushions its carbonation, resulting in a smooth, creamy micro-bubble texture. Judges noted its ability to cleanse the palate and remove food oils and wine tannins, leaving a subtly sweet finish. The water is sourced from glacial aquifers in Finland's Salpausselkä region, aged for over 10,000 years.
Germany's Nevas Water secured second place, described as the "Champagne of Waters" for its fine, persistent bubbles and velvety effervescence that mimic aged champagne. Packaged in a dark cuvée bottle with a cork and wire cage, Nevas is designed as a non-alcoholic alternative for celebrations. Its medium-mineral body pairs well with rich appetizers and seafood.
Norway's Voss took third place, recognized for its ultra-light, low-mineral profile that acts as a neutral canvas for delicate flavors. With a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) count near zero, Voss offers a crisp, clean taste that does not interfere with intricate spices or raw textures. Its iconic cylindrical glass bottle, designed by a former Calvin Klein creative director, adds visual appeal.
Traditional favorites like S.Pellegrino and Evian Sparkling were acknowledged as reliable benchmarks but were outperformed in the food-pairing rounds. The tasting demonstrated that a water's true character emerges when paired with food, making Vellamo the ultimate choice for luxury dining due to its harmonious balance and palate-cleansing properties.
