Frontieras North America Signs LOI with Cora Terminal for Multi-Phase FASForm Deployment in Illinois

Frontieras North America, an energy and environmental technology company, has announced a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Cora Terminal, LLC, for the phased development of FASForm(TM) production capacity at the Cora Terminal in Rockwood, Illinois. This strategic move is poised to have significant implications for the coal industry and the broader energy transition, as Frontieras seeks to commercialize its patented FASForm(TM) Solid Carbon Fractionation technology, which converts coal into clean fuels and industrial products with zero waste.

The LOI outlines a two-phase plan for the Cora site. Initially, Frontieras would lease approximately 85 acres for a plant designed to process 7,500 tons of coal feedstock per day. A subsequent expansion would add another 130 acres for a second plant. At full buildout, the facility would receive about 5.5 million net tons of coal feedstock annually, producing FASCarbon(TM), ultra-low-sulfur diesel, jet fuel, ammonium sulfate fertilizer, sulfuric acid, and naphtha. This scale of production underscores Frontieras's ambition to redefine coal utilization globally.

The Cora Terminal, a joint venture between Watco Companies, LLC and SCH Services, LLC, offers strategic advantages. It can accommodate up to four unit trains simultaneously, has the capability to move over 11 million tons of coal annually, and owns more than 300 acres of developable land. This infrastructure is critical for handling the large volumes of feedstock and product shipments, ensuring efficient logistics and market access.

The significance of this announcement extends beyond the immediate project. It represents Frontieras's third announced commercial site, following its $850 million first commercial facility under construction in Mason County, West Virginia. The expansion into Illinois signals a growing momentum for the company's technology and its potential to provide an environmentally sustainable path for coal utilization. As the world grapples with reducing carbon emissions, technologies like FASForm offer a way to use fossil fuels while mitigating environmental impact, potentially making coal a viable part of the energy mix in a carbon-constrained world.

For the local economy, the project could bring substantial investment and job creation. The phased development will involve site due diligence, engineering, permitting, infrastructure assessment, and definitive agreements. While the LOI is not a binding commitment, it sets the stage for detailed negotiations and feasibility studies. The parties will need to secure financing and approvals, but the potential benefits are clear: advanced manufacturing jobs, regional economic development, and a showcase for clean coal technology.

Frontieras's approach is to convert coal into high-value products without waste, which could reduce the environmental footprint of coal mining and processing. By producing fertilizers and industrial chemicals alongside fuels, the company integrates into multiple markets, enhancing the economic viability of each facility. This diversification also aligns with global efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources while maintaining energy security.

The announcement has implications for the coal industry at large, offering a potential model for value-added coal processing that could be replicated elsewhere. As more facilities come online, the technology could help stabilize coal markets by creating new demand for coal as a feedstock for high-value products, rather than solely for power generation. This could be particularly important for regions heavily reliant on coal mining, providing a transition pathway that preserves jobs and economic activity.

In summary, the LOI between Frontieras and Cora Terminal marks a pivotal step in commercializing advanced coal conversion technology. It highlights the potential for such technologies to transform the energy landscape and offers a glimmer of hope for the coal sector in an era of environmental concern.
