National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is advancing its service transformation by introducing a piece-based checked baggage policy, commonly known as the Piece Concept, effective for tickets issued on or after 1 September 2026. The new policy replaces the previous weight-based system, offering passengers more clarity and increased allowances. Under the Piece Concept, baggage allowances are determined by the number of pieces and maximum weight per piece, rather than total combined weight. This modernized approach provides allowances of up to two pieces weighing a maximum of 32 kilograms each, or up to 64 kilograms total, depending on route, travel class, and fare category.
According to Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills, the policy reflects the company's commitment to delivering a modern, consistent, and transparent travel experience. “The implementation of the Piece Concept forms part of Garuda Indonesia’s broader transformation to modernise our services and provide passengers with greater certainty,” Mills said. Passengers on domestic Economy Class will receive one piece up to 23 kg, while Business and First Class passengers receive two pieces up to 32 kg each (64 kg total). On international routes, Economy Class passengers get two pieces up to 23 kg each (46 kg total), and Business/First Class receive two pieces up to 32 kg each (64 kg total).
Compared to the previous Weight Concept, allowances increase significantly: domestic Economy rises from 20 kg to 23 kg, Business from 30 kg to 64 kg, and First from 40 kg to 64 kg. International Economy increases from 30 kg to 46 kg, Business from 40 kg to 64 kg, and First from 50 kg to 64 kg. Some passengers may receive up to 34 kg additional allowance. Mills noted that the Piece Concept is widely adopted globally and will strengthen service standardization and baggage handling efficiency, especially for connecting international flights.
