In a move that signals a shift toward sustained global preparedness against mpox, GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX) has welcomed the establishment of a new global mpox vaccine stockpile. Announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) on September 2, the initiative—funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and coordinated through the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision—aims to provide countries with timely and equitable access to vaccines during future outbreaks. The stockpile, which launched on August 27 and is scheduled to begin operations later this month, represents a long-term infrastructure for outbreak response, moving beyond the reactive measures seen during the 2024 mpox public health emergency.

The significance of this development lies in its potential to address persistent barriers to vaccine access, which were starkly highlighted during recent outbreaks. The WHO has outlined strategic objectives for the stockpile, including securing a robust mix of vaccines and supplies and promoting market-shaping efforts to ensure sustainable access. This framework underscores the need for reliable and diversified vaccine supply, a point that resonates with GeoVax's mission. David A. Dodd, Chairman and CEO of GeoVax, emphasized, "Establishing a dedicated global mpox vaccine stockpile is an important step forward in moving from reactive outbreak response toward sustained preparedness. Equitable access requires more than having vaccines available after an outbreak begins. It requires durable procurement infrastructure, sufficient vaccine supply, and the ability to rapidly deliver vaccine protection where it is needed."

GeoVax is advancing its mpox vaccine candidate, GEO-MVA, which is based on Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) technology. The company has completed key manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, and preclinical milestones, positioning it for a pivotal Phase 3 immune-bridging study slated for the fourth quarter of 2026. GEO-MVA's readiness includes GMP clinical product that has been manufactured and released for the study, alignment with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on an expedited development pathway, and engagement with contract research organizations and clinical sites. Preclinical studies have demonstrated orthopoxvirus-specific immune responses and neutralizing antibodies supporting the planned immune-bridging strategy.

The establishment of the stockpile, which builds on the Access and Allocation Mechanism from the 2024 emergency, also highlights the importance of multiple vaccine sources. GeoVax believes that additional qualified MVA vaccine sources can help expand supply availability and manufacturing capacity. The company is engaging with government agencies and international organizations regarding future procurement requirements, positioning GEO-MVA as a potential additional source of MVA vaccine supply. This aligns with the stockpile's objective of promoting sustainable access through a diversified product mix.

Beyond GEO-MVA, GeoVax is exploring next-generation technologies to address further barriers to vaccine access. These include MVA-X, a candidate targeting single-dose protection; continuous-cell-line manufacturing for scalable production; and microarray-based delivery systems that could simplify administration. Dodd noted, "The launch of this global stockpile represents a significant advance in the infrastructure for equitable mpox vaccine access and outbreak response. The next challenge is ensuring that the vaccines supporting that stockpile can be manufactured at scale and deployed as efficiently and broadly as possible."

As the global health community fortifies its defenses against mpox, the collaboration between international organizations, governments, and vaccine developers like GeoVax will be crucial. The new stockpile mechanism, coordinated by the ICG—whose partners include WHO, UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies—provides a durable framework for preparedness. GeoVax's progress with GEO-MVA and its commitment to expanding global access could play a pivotal role in ensuring that the world is better equipped to respond to future mpox outbreaks.
