On July 18, 2026, volunteers from the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International conducted a neighborhood cleanup in Hollywood, California, distributing copies of L. Ron Hubbard's The Way to Happiness booklet. The 12-member team worked along Franklin Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard, engaging with residents, business owners, and tourists.
The initiative combined physical cleanup with booklet distribution. After cleaning streets, volunteers handed out booklets, receiving positive feedback. One man, a tourist bus ticket seller on Hollywood Boulevard, recognized the booklet, stating he had read it in prison and found it calming. A coffee shop employee began reading the booklet immediately and requested a stack for the counter.
Volunteers also encountered an SUV driver who called them "awesome" and accepted booklets. A local resident expressed appreciation for the cleanup efforts. Mike, a security guard, took two booklets, while Glen from the Hollywood Partnership—a organization that cleans Hollywood Boulevard daily—thanked the volunteers and compared the concept to the movie "Pay It Forward." He received a personalized booklet and an extra to pass on.
Nick Kurtz, the cleanup in-charge, distributed bundles of a dozen booklets each. He approached people by asking if they liked helping others, then explained the booklet's message about being a good neighbor. A family from Riverside and a initially skeptical woman at a crosswalk accepted bundles enthusiastically.
For over eight years, the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International has supplied The Way to Happiness booklets for local cleanups. The booklet, written by L. Ron Hubbard, promotes the idea that "Happiness lies in engaging in worthwhile activities." More information about the church's activities is available at https://www.scientology.cc.
