The Hispanic Public Relations Association (HPRA) has announced its 2026 scholarship recipients, awarding the largest number of scholars in a single year since the program began in 2022. The record-setting class also includes HPRA's first high school senior recipient, marking a strategic expansion of the program's reach to students earlier in their academic journeys. Since its launch, the program has awarded 20 students with $50,000 in scholarships, according to NOTICIAS NEWSWIRE.
The 2026 recipients are Camila Garcia Chirino of the University of Florida, Isabelle Flores of The University of Texas at Austin, Luis David Latozefsky of Stetson University, Melanie Herrera of Florida International University, Nasaiah Algarin of American University, and Xavier Ramirez of the University of Southern California. They were selected for academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, and commitment to communications, with interests spanning public relations, strategic communications, public affairs, entertainment and media, civic engagement, and social impact.
The inclusion of a high school senior is significant because it extends HPRA's support to a critical decision-making point, when students are choosing college majors and early career paths. By reaching students before they enter college, the program aims to strengthen the pipeline of diverse talent entering public relations and related fields, addressing a long-standing industry challenge of attracting and retaining professionals from underrepresented communities.
"The growth of this program is something our leadership is deeply proud of because it reflects what is possible when our industry invests intentionally in the next generation," said HPRA National President Sonia V. Diaz. "With the support of partners like Aflac and H+M Communications, as well as individual donors, we have been able to expand our reach, open more doors, increase mentorship opportunities, and continue building a program that can make a meaningful impact in communities across the country."
Beyond financial assistance, recipients gain access to HPRA's national network through mentorship, professional development, and networking opportunities with industry leaders. They will also receive free access to HPRA National webinars and events, a mentorship and shadowing opportunity with a board member, and recognition at HPRA's annual ¡BRAVO! Awards gala on Nov. 19, 2026, at the LA River Center and Gardens in Los Angeles.
Among the recipients, Melanie Herrera of Florida International University will receive the Roshana Gossoff Memorial Scholarship, a $1,500 award for an FIU undergraduate demonstrating strong interest in public relations and communications. The scholarship honors Roshana Gossoff, a communicator, FIU alumna, and former HPRA Miami officer whose legacy continues to influence the South Florida community.
This year's program theme, "Legacy in Motion," reflects HPRA's history and its ongoing effort to shape each generation of communicators. The expansion of the scholarship program matters because it not only provides direct financial support but also builds a structured pathway into the profession. As companies and agencies face increasing pressure to reflect the audiences they serve, programs like this help create a more representative talent pool. By investing in students at multiple stages of their education, HPRA is working to ensure that the progress built over more than four decades continues forward, with a pipeline of diverse communicators ready to lead.
