IBU-tec advanced materials AG is making steady progress on the construction of its large-scale LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery material production facility in Bitterfeld, Germany. The company announced that construction phases for logistics infrastructure have been completed on schedule, and detailed engineering for the production facility is now underway. The steel structure for a new logistics hall, capable of storing approximately 1,800 pallets, has been erected, with interior fit-out expected to be finalized over the next six months. Additionally, trial operations for the new spray tower are slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, following the topping-out ceremony held in April 2026.
This development is part of the agreements made with PowerCo SE, which include process development, capacity expansion, and production of LFP cathode material. The facility, set to commence operations in 2028, will have an annual capacity of 15,000 tonnes, increasing IBU-tec's existing capacities by approximately five times. As the first facility of its kind in Europe, it represents a critical component in building a European battery value chain, reducing reliance on Chinese technology. IBU-tec's proprietary production process consumes only about half the energy of conventional Chinese methods, resulting in a superior CO2 footprint.
PowerCo has contractually secured the entire production volume for a minimum of ten years, underscoring the strategic importance of this partnership.
