Jon Benson, founder of bnsn.ai and the inventor of the video sales letter in 2006, argues that the key to persuasive copy is not slick tactics but the courage to tell the truth. In Episode 168 of The Proven Entrepreneur, titled "Not Your Fault, But Your Responsibility: Jon Benson on Selling With Truth," Benson tells host Don Williams that buyers are starved for authenticity, and that the bravest approach is often the most effective.
Benson, who has helped businesses generate hundreds of millions in sales, shared his philosophy during the conversation: "It's not all your fault, but now it's your responsibility. Now that you know this, it's your responsibility. You don't need to lie, but you do need to be brave enough to tell the truth." This line, he says, has resonated with audiences for years because it reframes a classic sales-letter trope from guilt to empowerment.
The episode covers Benson's transition from a 280-pound, 38-year-old heart attack survivor with 14 diagnosed illnesses to a copywriting legend and AI pioneer. He recounts how his personal struggles—growing up as an only child of a 56-year-old World War II veteran father, years of isolation, motocross racing, and competitive physique training at 5% body fat—have fueled his most successful campaigns. One example is a letter he wrote for a friend's abs product that opened with, "Hey, my name is Jon and I'm not a naturally lean guy." That letter is still running two decades later.
Benson's current venture, bnsn.ai, uses AI to teach machines to write persuasion the human way. He explains that he began working on machine learning for copywriting language in 2010, and that bnsn.ai runs live Friday coaching despite being an AI company because the human element is crucial to making the language work. "The human element is what makes the language actually work," Benson says.
The conversation also touches on value-driven marketing, the difference between coercion and compelling asks, and why NLP is often unfairly conflated with manipulation. Benson introduced listeners to buyer alignment profiles, the tool behind freebuyerprofile.com, which helps businesses identify and speak to their ideal customers.
Williams, author of Romancing Your Customer, agreed with Benson's approach, arguing that brutal honesty shocks buyers precisely because it is so rare. "Alienating the wrong-fit customer earns instant credibility with the right one," Williams said.
Benson also shared the origin story of the VSL and a lesson from meeting the P90X founders at a Tony Robbins event. He diagnosed that the program only scaled once it started telling the truth about the effort required, reinforcing his belief that honesty is the ultimate sales strategy.
