Pastor and author Kevin Horath has released his new book, The Self-Chosen One: When Prophecy Replaces Accountability, addressing a critical issue facing the modern Church: the rise of individuals who claim spiritual authority without accountability. Published by Lucid Books, the book challenges the trend of platform culture and social media enabling charisma to outpace character.
Horath, who serves as Lead Pastor of Hillside Bethel Ministries in Decatur, Illinois, draws on nearly three decades of ministry experience to explore how spiritual gifts must operate within biblical oversight. Rather than dismissing prophetic ministry, he argues for discernment rooted in Scripture, church history, and practical wisdom. “This book is not about rejecting prophecy,” Horath said. “It’s about protecting it by restoring it to its proper place within biblical oversight and healthy church leadership.”
The book examines how social media has transformed spiritual influence, often allowing popularity to replace accountability. Horath provides practical guidance for recognizing genuine prophetic ministry versus self-appointed authority, warning against unchecked charisma and spiritual narcissism. He also offers advice for pastors and leaders on protecting congregations and testing prophetic claims without quenching the Holy Spirit.
A key strength of The Self-Chosen One is Horath’s willingness to share personal failures alongside victories. “I share my real-life stories, including my failures, to help demonstrate the need for accountability in prophetic ministry,” he explained. The book blends historical facts, clinical information, personal experience, and biblical studies in an accessible, balanced manner.
Horath’s journey into authorship began during a difficult personal season, encouraged by his wife, Kathy, to turn sermon notes into a devotional. Writing became therapeutic, helping him re-engage with Scripture. Despite a lifelong passion for writing—dating back to high school creative writing and a college course on the Bible as Literature—Horath admits that self-promotion is challenging. “Marketing and selling myself is hard,” he said. “I’m not a big name or a well-known personality, and I’ve dealt with bouts of imposter syndrome.”
Nevertheless, the book aims to strengthen the Church by emphasizing that authentic spiritual authority is always accompanied by humility, character, and accountability. Horath encourages readers to see Scripture as relevant today, full of practical life lessons when studied in context. When not ministering, he enjoys sailing with his wife on Lake Decatur.
