DE SMET, SD – A new scholarship opportunity has emerged for undergraduate engineering students across the United States, courtesy of Michael Wiese, a seasoned engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur. The Michael Wiese Scholarship for Engineering, officially announced on August 22, 2026, is designed to provide financial assistance to students who exhibit a strong passion for engineering excellence, leadership, and creative problem-solving.
The scholarship, headquartered in De Smet, South Dakota, is open to enrolled undergraduates nationwide. It aims to recognize forward-thinking individuals who possess the technical creativity necessary to address real-world challenges. Engineering continues to be a driving force behind global advancements in automation, sustainable manufacturing, and infrastructure design, and this initiative seeks to nurture the talent that will shape these fields.
“Engineers shape the physical and digital frameworks of daily life,” said Michael Wiese, President and Owner of American Engineered Products. “Supporting the next generation of engineers ensures that industries continue to evolve, innovate, and meet complex future challenges with effective solutions.”
The scholarship reflects Wiese's long-standing dedication to practical invention and technical achievement. As a patented inventor with over two decades of industry leadership, he established this award to encourage students who aim to improve communities and industries through engineering applications. By engaging undergraduate minds through a specialized essay evaluation, the program prompts applicants to analyze pressing global and technical challenges, fostering critical thinking, strategic planning, and visionary leadership among rising professionals in electrical, mechanical, civil, industrial, and specialized engineering disciplines.
To qualify for the scholarship, candidates must meet specific criteria: they must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate at an accredited U.S. college or university, be pursuing or planning to pursue a degree and career in engineering, maintain strong academic standing, demonstrate commitment to innovation and leadership, and submit an original essay responding to the designated prompt. The essay should be 500 to 750 words, addressing an engineering challenge or opportunity expected to impact the future, along with a strategic approach to developing a solution and the role engineers play in building a better world.
The scholarship offers a one-time award of $1,000 to the selected recipient. The application deadline is March 15, 2027, with the winner announced on April 15, 2027. While headquartered in South Dakota, the scholarship is open to students nationwide, without regional restrictions.
