Stonegate Capital Partners Initiates Coverage on Yum! Brands, Highlighting Shift to Taco Bell and KFC Growth

Stonegate Capital Partners has initiated coverage on Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM), focusing on the company's evolving earnings model following the Pizza Hut divestiture. The analysis, based on Yum!'s second-quarter 2026 results, underscores a strategic pivot toward Taco Bell's domestic growth and KFC's international development runway.

Excluding Pizza Hut, Yum!'s system sales increased 7%, units grew 6%, same-store sales rose 4%, and Core Operating Profit advanced 8% in the quarter. This performance highlights the strength of the remaining portfolio, which is increasingly centered on high-growth, predominantly franchised brands. Taco Bell remains the primary U.S. growth engine, while KFC offers significant long-term international expansion potential.

The July food safety issue at Taco Bell has created a near-term interruption, but Stonegate views the impact as temporary. Sales trends have improved since the July 18 low, online sentiment has returned to pre-issue levels, and brand-love measures remain intact. Management expects the incident to pressure third-quarter sales and margins, but the underlying brand strength is expected to recover.

KFC provides the largest long-term development opportunity, supported by attractive franchisee economics and significant international whitespace. In the second quarter, KFC opened 660 gross restaurants across 55 markets, grew units by 7%, and continues to target higher average unit volumes and same-store sales. The division has an estimated 20,000-unit whitespace opportunity, which could drive sustained growth.

The Pizza Hut divestiture is expected to yield approximately $2.3 billion in aggregate net proceeds, which Yum! plans to use for revolver repayment and substantial share repurchases. This capital allocation strategy is expected to complement continued unit development and royalty growth across the remaining portfolio.

Stonegate's initiation of coverage reflects confidence in Yum!'s ability to deliver shareholder value through its focused brand portfolio and disciplined capital management. The company's recurring royalty base, driven by franchisee success, is a key component of its earnings model.
