The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been honored with Wine Spectator's 2026 Award of Excellence for its outstanding wine program. The award, part of Wine Spectator's annual Restaurant Awards, celebrates restaurants worldwide that offer exceptional wine lists and service.
Wine Spectator's Restaurant Awards, launched in 1981, recognize excellence across three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award. This year, 2,083 restaurants received the Award of Excellence, which requires a wine list of at least 75 selections that are well-chosen, quality-focused, and thematically matched to the menu in price and style.
"The restaurant industry is rapidly transforming as diners become more selective about when, how and what they drink. As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs," said Marvin R. Shanken, Chairman and CEO, Wine Spectator. "Congratulations to the 4,012 restaurants that earned a Restaurant Award and continue to elevate the wine experience for guests around the world."
Co-owners Lori and Kevin Cates expressed their gratitude, stating, "Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course. This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal."
The Italian Barrel, located at 1240 Decatur Street, was founded by Verona-born Chef Samantha Castagnetti and is now stewarded by the Cates. The restaurant emphasizes seasonal pastas, composed secondi, and a deeply Italian wine program. Wine Spectator's special Restaurant Awards issue will be available on newsstands July 21, 2026, and winners can be searched online at WineSpectator.com/Restaurants or via the free Restaurant Awards app.
The recognition underscores the growing importance of wine programs in dining experiences as consumers become more discerning. For The Italian Barrel, this award highlights its commitment to integrating wine seamlessly into the meal, encouraging guests to explore and share. The restaurant offers indoor and heated outdoor seating, with reservations available through OpenTable and its website at italianbarrelfq.com.
