As temperatures drop and a winter storm approaches, UGI Utilities, Inc. is urging customers to take precautions to stay safe and protect their homes. The natural gas and electric utility company, which serves more than 760,000 customers, issued a reminder for residents to prepare for potential power outages and hazardous conditions. UGI emphasizes the importance of energy safety during extreme weather events, including proper use of heating equipment and generators.
UGI advises customers to have emergency supplies on hand, such as flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio. Customers should also ensure they have a sufficient supply of food and water. For those using portable generators, UGI stresses the need to operate them outdoors and away from windows to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Additionally, the company recommends checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are functioning properly.
UGI also reminds customers of the dangers of using gas stoves or ovens for heating, as this can lead to carbon monoxide buildup. If customers smell natural gas, they should leave the area immediately and call 911 and UGI from a safe location. For more information on energy safety and winter preparedness, customers can visit UGI's website.
