VERAXA Biotech AG (NASDAQ: VRXA) announced the appointment of Christoph Erkel, Ph.D., as chief scientific officer, effective immediately. Erkel, previously vice president of research and development, will lead advancement of the company’s proprietary BiTAC(R) platform technologies for the development of cancer therapies targeting solid tumors. He succeeds Rick Austin, Ph.D., who will depart following a transition period.
Erkel brings two decades of experience in antibody therapeutics, antibody engineering and preclinical development, including prior leadership roles at MorphoSys AG, where he led immuno-oncology programs focused on T-cell engagers. VERAXA said his experience managing multidisciplinary research programs will support efforts to expand the company’s oncology pipeline and advance BiTAC(R) candidates toward clinical development.
The appointment comes as VERAXA accelerates its pipeline of bispecific T cell engagers, bispecific ADCs and other innovative antibody formats. The company’s BiTAC platform is designed to address the challenges of treating solid tumors, which account for the majority of cancer cases. Erkel’s expertise in T-cell engagers is expected to be instrumental in optimizing the platform’s potency and safety profile.
VERAXA was founded on scientific breakthroughs made at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), a world-renowned institution known for pioneering life science research. The company emphasizes a quality-by-design approach in its drug development process. With Erkel at the helm of R&D, the company aims to move multiple candidates into clinical trials, a critical step for validating its technology and creating shareholder value.
“We are thrilled to welcome Christoph to his new role,” said a VERAXA spokesperson. “His deep understanding of antibody engineering and immuno-oncology will be invaluable as we advance our BiTAC platform toward the clinic.” The company also expressed gratitude to outgoing CSO Rick Austin for his contributions during the transition.
Investors and analysts will be watching closely as VERAXA progresses its pipeline. The company’s forward-looking statements, as detailed in its SEC filings, highlight risks inherent in drug development, including clinical trial outcomes and regulatory approvals. However, the leadership change signals a renewed focus on execution. For more information on VERAXA and its latest updates, visit the company’s newsroom.
