The Vertical Stack Coalition, introduced by BWRCI, proposes a standards-based framework for urban energy sovereignty that rethinks energy infrastructure by building upward rather than outward. The initiative addresses the growing demand for dispatchable, scalable power within urban centers, driven by AI compute, data centers, reshored manufacturing, and defense infrastructure. Traditional horizontal expansion faces saturated transmission corridors and lengthy permitting timelines, creating a gap that Vertical Stack aims to fill.

Vertical Stack employs patent-pending verticalized infrastructure using commercial molten salt batteries, chosen for their near-zero operational emissions and low global warming potential (as low as 0.0306 kg CO2 eq/kWh). This chemistry avoids lithium-style thermal runaway and relies on widely available industrial materials, enabling full domestic sourcing. This aligns with U.S. industrial reshoring and reduces geopolitical exposure, making it compatible with initiatives like the JPMorganChase Security and Resiliency Initiative.

The architecture scales geometrically, with standardized structural envelopes, module integration, and dispatch logic. Construction timelines are 80–90% faster than traditional builds due to parallelized fabrication and sequencing. Each installation delivers multi-gigawatt-hour daily output with utility-scale dispatch characteristics within urban-compatible footprints.

Vertical Stack also enhances solar penetration by storing midday oversupply for evening demand, reducing curtailment and enabling local load balancing. It is electrically compatible with modular nuclear generation, supporting load-matched dispatch and improved economics. Additionally, with appropriate inverter design, installations can support islanded operation, frequency stabilization, and microgrid restoration—providing BlackStart capability for urban grids.

The ownership model enables municipal, community, utility, corporate, and defense stakeholders to control dispatch capacity, transforming energy from a commodity into localized authority.
