Amid polarized national discourse on firearms, veteran instructor and author Rick Billington is launching an educational initiative that redirects attention toward personal responsibility rather than political rhetoric. Billington, founder of Michigan Pistol Academy, has released The Responsible Gun Owner, a book that delves into the mental, legal, emotional, and decision-making aspects of civilian firearm ownership. Additionally, he is introducing a six-part blog series, The Responsible Gun Owner Series, starting July 12, 2026.
Billington argues that current conversations often neglect the responsibilities that come with the right to own firearms. “Far too much of the conversation around firearms focuses exclusively on the weapon itself. Very little attention is given to the responsibility, judgment, and decision-making that ultimately determine whether a firearm owner is truly prepared,” he said in a statement. The initiative aims to challenge misconceptions by emphasizing preparedness, accountability, conflict avoidance, and legal understanding.
The blog series covers topics such as mindset versus marksmanship, self-defense law, conflict avoidance, home defense planning, decision-making under stress, and emotional control. Billington stresses that “the responsible gun owner should never view a firearm as the first answer to conflict. The goal of proper training is not simply becoming proficient with a firearm. It is learning judgment, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, and understanding when force should never become necessary.”
With decades of experience in law enforcement and civilian firearms education, Billington believes many owners focus too heavily on technical shooting skills while overlooking broader responsibilities. The educational materials are hosted on the Michigan Pistol Academy website, with the series releasing weekly throughout the summer.
