Researchers at Washington University (WashU) Medicine have conducted a small clinical trial testing a new vaccine against glioblastoma, a highly aggressive form of brain cancer. The formulation was administered to nine patients who had previously undergone surgery and chemo-radiation therapy to remove their tumors. The results of this study show promise in extending tumor-free survival for a disease that is currently hard to treat, offering hope for improved outcomes in patients with this devastating diagnosis.
Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumor in adults, with a median survival of approximately 15 months even with aggressive treatment. Standard therapy includes surgical resection, followed by radiation and chemotherapy. However, recurrence is nearly universal, and effective treatments for recurrent disease are limited. The new vaccine, developed by WashU researchers, aims to harness the patient's own immune system to target and destroy remaining cancer cells, potentially reducing the risk of recurrence.
The trial, which was a small-scale study, focused on safety and immunogenicity, as well as preliminary evidence of efficacy. Patients received the vaccine after completing standard therapy, and were monitored for tumor progression and immune response. The results indicated that the vaccine was well-tolerated, with no serious adverse events reported. Importantly, several patients experienced prolonged progression-free survival compared to historical controls, suggesting that the vaccine may be effective in delaying tumor regrowth.
